DANCE ME OUTSIDE ISP

The novel DANCE ME OUTSIDE is written by W.P. Kinsella and is inspired by Native life in Canada. The story creatively explores the ways of Natives adjusting to a new life in a new land. The location is in Sucker Lake, Ontario on a reserve named Kidiabinessee. The main character is an eighteen-year-old boy who has to deal with issues that mainly involve the relationship between Natives and the ‘Whites’. Silas Crow is the narrator of the novel and introduces Native life to the reader with great emphasis on the personal concerns that he has with his lifestyle. Silas and his best friend, Frank Fencepost, live in a Native Community where it is hard to get along with the white folks that live nearby. The plot contains strong problems that involve drug abuse, racism, violence, and murder. The story starts off with Silas and Frank planning to get somewhere in life and attend mechanic school in British Columbia. Silas’ older sister, Illiana, is coming back to town from Toronto, Ontario to visit the family with her ‘white’ husband, Robert McVee. Robert is a top-notch lawyer who really wants Illiana’s family to accept him. Illiana comes back to find her ex-boyfriend, Gooch, out of jail. Illiana’s feelings return for him, but she decides to s

. . .

When Silas gets back to town, him and Sadie make-up and plan to go to British Columbia together. Studying the principles and morals of the Native people will enlighten and broaden the thinking gap of one’s mind. The heavy consumption of alcohol and drug abuse begins and the violence gets out of hand. Silas’s mother says that the teenagers of the 20th century have forgotten the Native values and beliefs. A year later, a Native public speaker came to Sucker Land to raise awareness about Margaret’s death and how the murderer was sentenced with only a year of jail time under the charge of manslaughter. After the break up, Silas recommences his old lifestyle. Overall the novel brings forth such aspects of the Native culture that haven’t been explored or brought to the attention of an everyday individual before. Without thinking twice, Silas and a group of friends plan to kill the murderer of Margaret on a Saturday night at the pub. Illiana is pregnant with a baby boy and her mom is really happy with McVee. What Silas and his friends plan to do next is the ultimate step towards savagery and the characters seem to be at the lowest point of their lives at this part of the story. This creates anger among the youth of the reserve. He begins to ‘hang out’ on the streets once again and begins to loose control over his actions. That night triggered war between the Native and the White folks with the rape and murder of Little Margaret. Sentenced with the wrong charge for taking someone’s life. When Silas becomes aware of Sadie’s actions, he gets angry because he believes the petition will not make a difference in the judgment that had been made.
