In April, 1864, Forrest and his men captured Fort Pillow in Jackson, Tennessee. Johnson claimed that Forrest was the most impressive general of the American Civil War.
After the war it is believed that Forrest helped establish the Ku Klux Klan and became its first Grand Wizard in May, 1867. The fort contained many blacks and white soldiers. He organized the cover for the retreat at Shiloh.
Forrest caused William Sherman serious problems during his Atlanta Campaign. An investigation discovered that they had killed the garrison after surrender, buried blacks allive, and burned tents with wounded soldiers. He took part in the evacuation of Corinth, then was promoted to Brigadier General in July of 1862 and raised the troops needed to have a full brigade. He fought in the battle in Kentucky, but his next independent operation was in west Tennessee. Sherman was quoted as saying that Forrest had to be "hunted down and killed even if it costs 10,000 lives and bankrupts the Federal treasury.
