Literacy

There is no difference in meaning between literacy and reading or writing. But there is a lot more to it than that. Literacy cannot be understood apart from the culture to which it belongs and which it helps to articulate. It is always linked to a purposive body of writing a literature within which the reader is said to be literate. This body of writing will be in some sense interpretive and critical of its societal context. So we can speak of functional literacy. Someone can be generally "literate" in the sense that they can read and write common words and understand notices, newspaper articles or even textbooks, but still be functionally illiterate in relationship to a specific critical and interpretive literature. Literacy is the ability to participate in the imaginative life of a culture; both by absorbing and re-living its insights in reading, and adding to them- in writing. But by comparison with say the period between the wars, contemporary society does not actually use literacy in a functional way.All lot of different languages are existing in this world and every people use them for communicate and express their feeling about themselves to other people. Whenever I go to hospital, police station or superior court, I had many communication problems. His essay begs important questions about the causes of illiteracy, and one of quotes explains about how illiteracy is influence to people. I have been in America for 5 years and I am still having many problems with speaking, reading and writing English. I think every language is very important and we should use them for good things. Learning new language is not an easy thing because if you want to learn that, you have to understand about their cultures too. In "The Human Cost of an Illiterate Society," Jonathan Kozol argues that illiteracy is powerlessness. In the story of Frederick Douglass shows a quote that explains the reading and writing skill are used for his life. Reading helps people get good jobs, a good job allows that person to make money, and making money allows that person to buy the basic necessities of life. Being able to read and write is one of the most important skills a person needs. Likewise, those who have chronic difficulties meeting the memory demands of school should not be easy to encourage your study. I knew that if he could speak English, he would have. Being literate allows people to understand and have the ability to achieve almost any goal. But our society still has a lot of people who cannot read and write. First, Douglass learns to read and write because he wants to say thing about freedom.
