A Streetcar Named Desire

            
             In A Streetcar Named Desire, Stanley Kowalski has many animalistic characteristics. He shows this through his actions, through the way he treats other people, through the way other characters describe him, and through the way he tries to destroy Blanche, Stanley's sister in-law. Stanley is more like a caveman than a civilized human being.
             Stanley's actions are very uncouth; the first time we see him in this play, he is bringing his "kill" home from the supermarket. He yelled out "meat"(14) when he was first talking to his wife, Stella. He asked her, " Haven't fallen in, have you?"(31), when Stella occupies the bathroom too long. Stanley was getting very drunk while he was playing cards with his friends. When Stella and Blanche came in, he slapped Stella on her thigh. She got very angry and said very sharply, "That's not fun, Stanley."(48) When Blanche turned on the radio, he got up and threw it out the window. Stella said, "Drunk- drunk- animal thing, you!"(57) Then Blanche said, "Stella, watch out, he's-"(57), and Stanley tried to beat up Stella but the men from the poker game grabbed him first. After everyone went home, he wanted Stella to come back to him. She was upstairs in her neighbor, Eunice's apartment. He started calling her like he was calling an animal. He went outside and yelled, "STELL-LAHHHHH!"(60) At Blanche's birthday party, Stanley got angry at Stella for calling him a pig. She said, "Your face and your fingers are disgustingly greasy."(107) (he threw his plate against the wall.) Stanley said, "My place is cleared! You want me to clear your place?"(108) When Stella went to the hospital, Blanche and Stanley were alone that night. Blanche was afraid of Stanley. She kept asking him to stay away.
