Joy Luck Club
The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan, was an illuminating and beautiful story ofthese Chinese women and each ones' fight to overcome her own internal conflicts. The story brings to life the characters of this book and each ones' struggle to find the right path for herself and her family. Some of the major motifs seen throughout this book are sacrifice and control over one's destiny. The sacrifices made for both children or parents' shows the strong bonds these people hold with one another. The control over one's destiny is also seen in this book, in many instances what some mothers want for their daughters is completely different from what their daughters want or think they want for Many of the characters make huge sacrifices for the love of their children or parents. An-Mei's mother slices off a piece of her own flesh to put in her mother's soup in hopes to cure her. An-Mei gives a vivid account to wha
I enjoyed reading this book immensely, the book's morals, and at times, loving mood give a better view into the lives of these people not related by blood but a common interest, Family. You learn about the lives of these women and how each one overcomes their struggles. This is how a daughter honors her mother. However, Ying-ying's behavior contradicts the symbolic side of her character. An-mei's mother's later suicide could be considered a selfish act of desperation, however An-Mei's mother's choice was chosen in order to assure An-Mei with a better life. Another rocky mother-daughter relationship in this story is that of Jing-mei and her mother. " Jing -Mei is much happier simply living her life as the person she is. "Wu tsing, fearful of my mother's vengeful spirit, promised my mother's visiting spirit that he would raise Syaudi and I as his honored children. " That is how An-Mei's mother chose to honor Popo, by sacrificing and enduring that pain. Jing-Mei on the other hand, doesn't want to force her self to surface whatever hidden talent she does have, or become something she's not " I had new thoughts, willful thoughts, I won't let her change me, I won't be what I'm not. Suyuan believes that her daughter has this great and wonderful talent that is going to amaze the world and that she wants to share with the world if only they work out their differences. An-Mei's mother knows that Wu tsing is fearful of spirits, and therefore uses it to her advantage. Her strong mentality of marring an older man in China only leads to personal pain for her when she discovers the infidelities of her husband. " An-mei's mother's husband would raise them honorably, and in turn both An- Mei and her brother had a better life because of her mothers death.
