The Heat is On
The article, The Heat Is On discusses the rising problem of global warming. Many scientists and experts on the subject agree that humans are causing this sharp rise in climate. Jerry Mahlman, the director of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory at Princeton University, says there is little left to debate on the subject. "I'll take ten to one odds against anyone who says this is bogus," he remarks. He believes that the industrial output of greenhouse gases is responsible for the change. He is not alone with his views. New studies show that the planet is hotter than it has been in thousands of years. The basic idea of global warming is the earth's ocean, soil, plants, and animals naturally release carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. Along with other gases such as methane and water vapor, they trap solar radiation in, keeping a steady climate. Human activities in the last century appear to be adding more greenhouse gases to the atmosphere than are being naturally recycled. Nature essentially can't keep up with our pace of producing greenhouse gases. This increasing margin is what scientists believe to be the cause of global warming.
This doesn't seem to be that much, but climate changes like these can cause drastic problems. Everything would receive some effect of global warming. Even though I now think we as humans should raise awareness, I'm not saying we should eradicate all forms of pollution. The entire biosphere could be affected by the rising sea levels, and increasing climate. They can't turn things around if they don't like what happens. It shows exactly what could happen if we don't take control of global warming. Mann also says the trend will continue. "With this millennial perspective, the change in this century really jumps out at you," says Mann. Since 1900, the earth's average temperature has increased by 1. Some blame these weather changes on phenomenon such as El Nino, volcanic eruptions, or changes in the sun. They assert that past warm periods have been a boon to humans, aiding in agriculture and easing life in cold latitudes while causing few serious disruptions. Global warming could affect a species over time, by creating an alteration or mutation in its way of life.
