Shrek
"I'm not the one with the problem, it's the world that seems to have the problem with me. People take one look at me... A big stupid ugly Ogre. They judge me before they even know me..." -Shrek. Everyday, millions of people are judged based on a simple first impression. Society is quick to pass judgements on people based on factors such as appearance, language, setting, and possessions. However, when the time is taken to get to know a person, it is proven more times than not, that the judgements taken are false. As expressed throughout the movie Shrek, sometimes things are not always as they appear. It is primarily through the characters in Shrek that this theme is expressed. At home in his swamp, a flatulent ogre named Shrek defends his life of solitude, though deep down it's probably not his first choice. Due to the fact that he is a strikingly ugly ogre, he is automatically assumed to be evil and cruel, therefore labeled an outcast to society. Shrek exploits that misconception in order to protect his privacy.. An example being when he was confronted by torch bearing, pitchfork wielding villagers. He describes the gruesome fates awaiting those who disturb him, in hopes of the villagers never retu
It is then that Shrek's true personality begins to reveal itself. Shrek also sees her as being perfect, in fact she is too perfect. This flaw is not seen in her until we arrive towards the conclusion of the movie, when Donkey accidentally sees her. However, someone can also be seen as completely flawless, but hold an inside that is not so perfect. Society is quick to accept people if they are of ideal appearance, but in reality whether ugly or beautiful, both can hold kind inner beings. However, as the movie continues Shrek is accompanied by a talking donkey that takes no thought to Shrek's ugliness. When analyzing an onion, the outside layers are dry and flaky, a part of an onion that is regularly thrown away, referring to Shrek being thrown away from society. When given the chance to be himself by Donkey, and Princess Fiona later on in the movie, Shrek reveals a kind, harmless, caring ogre. He views this land the most perfect town to ever exist. However, there is one minor problem; Lord Farquaad is not truly a king. until you find true loves first kiss, then take loves true form". Donkey is shocked at first, but is quick to realize that although her figure has changed physically, she is still the same person on the inside. Perfect law, perfect people, and most important, perfect ruler. Later in the movie when Shrek arrives to Duloc, he takes a look at Lord Farquaad's enormous castle and quickly comments that Lord Farquaad is compensating for something.
