Oil and lawnesses

             One of the many articles in the "Green Guerillas" book is titled 'Oil, lawlessness and indigenous struggles in Ecuador's Oriente', by Judith Kimerling. This article consists of two main parts, one on the oil giant, Texaco and its impact on Ecuadorean Amazon and the other part on the struggles and resistance of the indigenous population.
             I will analyze the second part. I will focus on discussing particular challenges related to structural changes and global demands, , and then I will discuss the main players of this situation, how they react and how they defend their interests.
             As the article notes, the Indigenous people make up about 40 % of the total Ecuador population. Nevertheless, the government treats them worse than nothing. It looks like the situation has not changed much from early colonization when it comes to the treatment of the natives. They suffer racism, discrimination and risk of cultural assimilation. One might ask why these people do not take advantage of a more developed society and adapt what is good for them? Well, it is not that simple. Starting with colonizations, the natives have only seen trouble coming from the so called "developed societies". These "white" people have brought disease and destruction, followed by death. And these "wonderful gifts" keep coming all the time. It is not a simple situation. The cultural gap is enormous, and the fact that the Indigenous population leaves far from modernized centers of big cities just widens this gap even more. This creates a cultural challenge which results in inability of the two cultures to create a relationship. In the eyes of the Ecuadorian government these natives are just in their way and should be driven out of that precious land, the land that will pay off the enormous national debt.
