Now able to write his own name in English, Sequoyah wasdetermined to preserve the Cherokee culture and began to developa system of writing for the Cherokees in 1809. One unique thingis that he had two names Sequoyah, his native american name, andGeorge Gist, after his father. Later inGeorgia while selling one of his silver-works a man suggested thathe sign his name to his works like the more popular craftsmen hadbegan to do. Furtheralong his travels he obtained the skills of a Silvercraftsman andworked in Cherokee County, Georgia. Sequoyah never learned to speak, read, or write the Englishlanguage completely, but he accomplished great things for hisculture. He will always beremembered for helping revolutionize the Cherokee society andculture. This also allowed books to be published in Cherokee and thewidespread of thousands to learn how to read and write in theirown language. Unlike most Cherokeeleaders Sequoyah was only half Cherokee. With that in mind he visited Charles Hicks, a wealthyfarmer who was able to read and write in English, who showed himhow to write his name on a piece of paper. Sequoyah, his native american name, was given to him because of his walking dificulty dirived frombirth. He also joined the UnitedStates Army and faught in the Creek War in 1813-1814. His father, NathanielGist, was an English fur-trader and his mother, Wureth, was amember of the Paint Clan of the Cherokee tribe. Taking that into thought he became very interested inthe idea. He took some of theletters of the English alphabet and some of the Latin language andof the Arabic and changed some of the writing techniques and putCherokee syllables to the characters.
