Natural Born Killers
John Grisham claims in his article "Unnatural Killers" that the film Natural Born Killers influenced a couple of teenagers, Sarah Edmondson and Benjamin Darras, to murder his friend Bill Savage and Patsy's Byers. Grisham states that the violence in this film pushes these teenagers to go on a killing spree. Grisham holds Oliver Stone, the director of Natural Born Killers, responsible for the acclaimed effects of the film. Grisham thinks that the film makers should be sued so the victims can have a financial compensation and so that the desire to make these type of violent films will be halted. I disagree with Grisham's accusations completely. The background of these teenagers alone is enough to refute Grisham's claims. Grisham is clearly blinded by his fe
I feel that Grisham was wrong in his allegations towards Stone. The constitution says that Stone can not be held liable for what these delinquents did. elings for his friend to see reality. The teenagers clearly intended to do what they did and used Natural Born killers as a scapegoat for their actions. Both of the teens have also been violent in the past. At least artists like Stone can show it for what it really is. It was in fact, from what I saw, to enlighten people of how the media can glorify such things as murder. Both teens have had a history of alcohol and drug abuse. The more Mickey and Malory killed the more media attention they received. To blame an artist, who is only doing what he does best, alone for this is absurd. If we hold Stone liable for these murders what is going to be next? Does Grisham think we can get rid of this sort of violence all together? The media will always expose violence in a gaudy manner. If we have limits on how we are able to express ourselves, our truth can never be told.
