Binge Drinking
To discuss binge drinking, you first need to know what binge drinking is, and it's definition. Binge drinking is when five ( for men ) and four (for women ) or more in a row with in a week. That doesn't sound so bad huh? But it is. In a recent study (1999) was conducted by Harvard University, it was found that 23% of the students were identified as binge drinkers. This has gone up from the 21% in 1997 and the 20% in 1993. (learning success p261) Typically most binge drinkers are white males under the legal drinking age. I found some good news in all of this study, the amount of students who decided to stay away from alcohol had gone up from 15% in 1993 to 19% in 1999. Many times grades drop as low as a "D" from an "A", scary huh? Nearly two-thirds of the binge drinkers in college have been found to missed class. If students knows that a certain beer is cheap that will give then an incentive to go out and buy the beer. They are "very nervous" and "worried" about the amount of alcohol on college campus's. Studies show that college students drink more when they are in a group, which speaks to peer influences. Most parents are prepared for the stories and the "talks". I feel that parents do have their child's best interest in mind. The type of college, geographical location, the ethnic and gender makeup plays a role in the amount of drinking that occurs on campus. com says that where a student lives also has a big influence on the drinking habits of students. Campus facilities should remain open, and college's should expand their recreational activities on nights and weekends. It was quoted in an article in www.
