Serve and Volley

Serve and volley is a lost art in the tennis world. It is virtually impossible to see more than a handful of players use this style of play. However, it is considered to be the most effective and strategic way to play the game. If this is true, why don’t we see more players serve and volley?

To begin with, in order to be a true player of serve and volley it requires several skills that are very difficult to master. Obviously, by just the name of serve and volley it is assumed that the player would have to do both well. Almost all the players on the tour have big serves and great volleying skills. However, a large portion of them can only volley well at the net. They lack the skills it requires to take a volley at mid court before they can reach the net a

. . .

The amounts of running, diving, twisting, and stretching of the body really has an affect on the body and it takes its toll over time.

If a player can attain all the skills listed above, than they will have a great career as a serve and vollyer. The touch and precision it requires to make these volley’s are what keeps them from being able to serve and volley.

Once you have acquired these necessary and vital skills of the game, you have to learn how to use them effectively. However, being able to attain these skills and use them effectively is not an easy thing to do. You have to hit a well placed serve, come in and make a good first volley in order to set yourself up to end the point on the next volley. Thus, this could be the reason as to why the tennis world doesn’t see more players serve and volley. By doing this you will be able to end points quickly and conserve your energy. With the speed and consistency of so many players on the tour, if your volleys are not clean and crisp than your opponent can make you look like a total fool at the net. Also whenever you hit a great serve and somehow your opponent hits a great return for a winner and your just in disbelief. However, if your touch and precision aren’t that great, than you will be in store for a lot of running and hard work just to win a single point. Nothing is more frustrating than being at the net and watching your opponent blast the ball past you and hearing the crowd cheer for your opponent. However, with lots of practice and hard work one can attain these skills.
