Vietnam War (1965-1975)

The Vietnam War has sparked controversy for over five decades. I never knew enough about the war to have an opinion on it, but after I finished my research I came to the conclusion that much of this war was senseless and irresponsible. In the beginning the United States feared that Communism from foreign entities would trickle in the U.S. if given the chance. So when Viet Minh began a series of attacks on the French colonials in Vietnam, President Harry Truman authorized 15 million dollars in military aid to the French. Between 1965 and 1975, the American government dug themselves deeper and deeper into the war. America's stand point focused on winning the war and proving that we went into this fight for a just cause rather than keeping out the Communists. With the growing popularity of the media and yellow journalism, the American people had a front row seat of what was occurring in the country that few knew much about. Many Americans initially were scared of the "Domino Effect" of communism and in turn supported the war, but after the secrets, the thousands of soldiers and innocent people being killed their eyes were opened to the harsh realities that war brought forward.

Vietnam would still be divided, but be led by two governments. This is just one example of how quickly there powers at be were to taking back what they say on the issues. Over 2 million Americans served in the Vietnam War with over 47,000 deaths, how could the press not publish and report these things. Too many people in our government knew that the war was going no where, but they had too much pride and made irresponsible decisions that lead to the death of thousands of American soldiers. The papers revealed the decisions made by previous White House administrations concerning Vietnam which festered more debate in the U. to see that this war had been turned into a game of politics rather than a fight to protect other countries from Communists. More and more troops are funneled into Vietnam where they were "advisors" for the South Vietnamese army, combat troops and pilots. I know that the media sensationalized many issues during the war, but I think that they played a key role in persuading the people of the U. The truth about this event was swept under the rug. One case in point was the Gulf of Tonkin. After looking back at the actions and decisions that our leaders made during this time, I would have to say that they did a poor job by leading our country into the Vietnam War.
