College Application Essay
I moved to the U.S. with my mother without any prior knowledge of American culture when I was in the ninth grade. My first language is Chinese, and I had much difficulties acclimating to my new environment at first. I didn't have any friends in school and felt like an outsider in a school that was mostly white. Some students ridiculed my English and classes were intimidating. However, once the initial culture shock wore off, I caught on very fast. I started to volunteer for answers in class. I attended many school activities and made many friends. My father joined us in L.A. after three years. My parents had some problems adjusting as well, not having steady career jobs. Wanting to help my parents with their finances, I started to work as a telemarketer at 011/NOS Communica
, and come home to work on the homework. Last year, I quit the bank job and started import and wholesale business named ANA Trading. As the First Vice President of Real Estate Loan Department Jack Tweedy said, "We trust your abilities, that's why we hired you!" This time, I learned so much about the professional work environment. I became a loan processor at the Cathay Bank at age 18, youngest ever at the bank. after school every day, to work until 9 p. Six years have passed since my first day in America. I gained appreciation for family, hard work, and the preparation for success. And I now have the self-confidence that if I try very hard, I can achieve anything I put my mind to it. I worked 35 hours a week, mostly after-school. From my experiences, I have learned so much. I need a good education so I can take my business to the next level.
