Christianity

             Christianity is the most widely practiced religion in the Western Hemisphere. The title for people who practice Christianity is "Christians". Christians believe that God's son is Jesus Christ. The belief in Jesus and God separates Christianity and Judaism. The Jews believe that the Messiah has not come to earth yet. While Christians believe that the Messiah is Jesus. Messiah means "Anointed One". Jesus Christ was born on 1 A.D and died around 36 A.D. Christianity was once persecuted in Rome, but spread to throughout the world. The religion began in Jerusalem, the holy city of many religions.
             Around 1 A.D, Jesus Christ was born from Mary and Joseph in the town of Bethlehem. Mary was told that she would concieve Jesus from the archangel Gabriel. Therefore, Mary was a virgin and the mother of Jesus. Jesus began preaching the word of God around 28-33 A.D (Website, p 2). The beliefs of Christians were orally told before the Bible and the Gospels were written. The Gospels were the spread of Good News about the resurrection of Jesus. Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John wrote the Gospels.
             Because Jesus was a Jew, Judaism is the basis for Christianity. Christians use many of the Jewish customs. The main difference between Jews and Christians is that the Jews believe the Messiah has not come yet. The Christians believe the Messiah was Jesus.
             Roman officials put Jesus to death. They executed him because they thought he would cause riots within the civilization of Rome and lead to destruction. He was considered an enemy of the state. Pontius Pilate, a Roman Govenor, condemned Jesus to death. Jesus died around 36 A.D. He died by crucifixion. Crucifixion was the common Roman method of execution in which the accused was placed on a cross and left to die a slow death by suffocation (Mazour p R25). Jesus began preaching.
