If it is not, all computer users that legitimately purchase software will suffer. Software piracy is defined as the unauthorized duplication, distribution or use of computer software. This can range from making more copies of software than the license allows or installing software licensed for one computer onto multiple computers or a server. With new technologies today the ability to pirate software has become much easier. Many believe this not to be a problem; however, thousands of people's lives are being affected by this everyday. Places such as Newsgroups, IRC, Warez Web Sites, FTP Servers, GnuTella, and online auctions. Because keygens are not illegal, sites that have them for download tend to be stable and stay around sometimes for years. However, new platforms have opened up. These pirates make their money in taking a program and copying it, then distributing it illegally. This software should not be used as an illegal means of profit making. The crackdown has been started at the large distributors of pirated software, this is the people who own and operate illegitimate distributing companies. These tools are most commonly know as cracks and keygens, both are used to modify the software's registry and make them registered. " Copying software is an act of copyright infringement and is subject to civil and criminal penalties. These companies do not charge as much as the real software companies and distributors but are still making millions on the software. Not to say that it was not happening, but it was not as wide spread as today. Like a software crack, a keygen is technically not illegal, but using one to avoid paying for commercial software is illegal. The post-Napster era has opened up many new doors in software piracy.
