Power Dynamics in Muslim Society
The article Behind the Veil: A Muslim Woman Speaks Out portrays the power dynamics used to influence the life of Ayaan Hirsi Ali from early childhood to the present day, post 9/11 society. A Muslim woman oppressed her entire life, understood that the way Dutch government was run affected the safety and the equality of her and other Muslim women living in the Netherlands. Ali developed a leading voice by disapproving the governments support for multiculturalism, a social theory that encourages interest in many cultures within a society rather than only the mainstream culture. This social concept increased the population of isolated Muslim women in Dutch Society, due to the large group of citizens informed of the oppressions that Muslim women face by Muslim men. When taking such action, Ali did not realize the undersized amount of power she held compared to the power in numbers of Muslim citizens condemning her ideas, the superiority of male Muslims and the power of an inequitable government. Muslims who disagreed with Ali united their opinions using hate mail and disparaging internet web sites to create a strong enough coercive force against Ali, in order to put a stop to her ideas. Since the majority of Muslim spokespersons
Almost Twenty Muslim associations have faulted Ali for criticizing the discrimination of female Muslim. The power of the media has also assisted in the growing of a negative consensus pertaining to Ali's controversial notions. If a woman does marry, the Muslim religion allows a total absence of any idea of association between couples, as it does in Christianity. The Dutch Liberal Party decided to ask Ali if she wanted to become a candidate in the parliamentary elections next January. As times change, these traditions and customs are slowly evolving with the help of public disagreement. This has been an Islamic way of life for thousands of years, and without any modification of Muslim law or government law, these customs will progress through time. A husband is allowed the right to marry as many women as he sees fitted; the right to inherit twice the amount of females, and the right to cancel a marriage of a legally aged woman if he thinks the dowry is not sufficient. If a woman were to report the sexual abuse to the authorities, she would be perceived as a tramp or prostitute by society. She says "sexual abuse in the family causes the most pain because the trust is violated on all levels. It is quite unfortunate that a woman living in the world of Islamic culture is inevitably subjected to such poor treatment by Muslim men. Born in Somalia, Ali was forced by her religious leaders to participate in a tremendously unpleasant ritual, which made it mandatory for her genitals to be cut. In most Muslim countries, a woman may be denied a male partner by being married off to the Koran to prevent the division of land and deprive her of inheritance. When the government of Somalia was experiencing some political difficulties, Ali and her family had to escape to Saudi Arabia. Women who have been raped by other Muslim men are found guilty of adultery due to male oriented Muslim law.
