Workplace Observation
I currently hold a position at a large company named Collins&Aikman. This was a big jump for me, moving from a small family business to a giant automotive supplier. What amazed me the most is the fact that an eight billion dollar company ran much smoother than a ten-man crew. This is all made possible by a very well organized structure. Our company structure is costumer based; therefore we have separate business units for each major customer (in this case General Motors, Ford and Dymler Chrysler). Each business unit has a number of teams that work together towards achieving the goals set by a strategic plan. In one way or another, every team member is involved in designing the strategic plan. By doing so, everyone has a better understanding on what is expected from him or her. Obviously this is a very flat structure and for that reason is easier to manage. The quality of work is greater since employees can concentrate on the quality of the product rather that making senseless charts and reports for different layers of management. This kind of structure is al
I can freely say that all the above results on high performance and costumer satisfaction. Another communication disconnection I have noticed is between the engineering and purchasing department. Our company employs some of the finest engineers in the area and contributes to the cutting edge technology and high quality products. There is one and only one way to achieve this goal and that is intelligent engineering. On the other hand product engineers are highly knowledgeable in the design aspect of it. There are also weekly supplier meetings that are designed to eliminate any roadblocks that could result in failing to deliver the product on time. World-class quality utilizing cutting edge technology is our culture. Organizing seminars, benchmarking, research, tours to different plants and temporary placement of employees in different locations achieve that. It is also imperative that every team member possesses strong communication skills, since the major portion of the job is emphasized on that. Sometimes a product engineer, based on his experience and instinct, will make a manufacturing decision without consulting a manufacturing engineer. I have to admit, I am proud to say that I work for Collins&Aikman. so beneficial for the inter-company communication. Weekly meetings are held to keep the communication lines open, especially between the design and manufacturing departments. That means that every engineer has to be innovative. Our business unit specializes in designing and manufacturing parts and components for GM specifically Cadillac vehicles and trucks which has a world-class quality.
