The Comparison Between Two Cultures

Similarities Between Two Cultural People In the short story "The Visit" by Nick Vaca is about an old man named Don Pedro who lives in the outskirts of the San Joaquin Valley. Don Pedro lives in an old ragged trailer and has a pain in his leg for ten years called rheumatism. He also haves twelve children and one out of those twelve makes a little effort to see their father. Don Pedro's son Ralph comes from the Bay area to come see his father. Ralph loves his father very much and one day Ralph hopes to sacrifice himself for his father's life. But Ralph goes to see Don Pedro with a bottle of Whiskey in his hand. Ralph insists to take his father to the hospital, but later makes some excuse for not taking him. Now that his father really needs him. Ralph will now wonder if he would ever get another chance to sacrifice himself for his father again. Also in the short story "A Rosary for Dona Marina" by Octavio Romano is about a woman named Dona Marina who lives with Pedro, one of her second cousins, and her niece Lina. Dona Marina took custody of her sister's orphaned daughter. Dona Marina was once married with no children, then her husband had left her, and she never remarried after that. Dona Marina was an old fashion wo

That made Dona Marina more upset due to the fact that Lina and Pedro are family members. Since Don Pedro is a very old man and is suffering from his disease in his leg, it is hard for his to move around. Moreover, she threw a fit because its bad enough that Lina is just a young girl, too young to take responsibility of a child. Similarly, her family abandoned Dona Marina because the way she reacted when she found out that Lina was pregnant, and she blamed Pedro for being the father. Secondly Don Pedro was abandon by his family because no one wants to take the responsibility of an old man. Dona Marina is a very religious woman for example; Romano asserts, "others implied that Dona Marina was too religious". (Par 84) More so, Lina ran away from the hospital to go live with a family to a close friend of her mother. Momentarily the footsteps ceased and then they moved into the kitchen, out the door, across the dirt yard, and Pedro was gone not to return. Like Ralph, they must feel like their father's time might be up real soon. When she found out the Lina got pregnant she assumed that her second cousin Pedro had to be the father of Lina's baby. Vaca asserts " this was the second visit within the last two months for Ralph". In conclusion, Don Pedro and Dona Marina are both very lonely people. Lina was too young to have a child, and Dona Marina saw that, and to make things worse she started thinking that Pedro was the father of the baby. Firstly Don Pedro is a very lonely old man whom has a disease in his leg called rheumatism. (Par 10) Ralph feels like he has to drink before he sees his father because he doesn't want to see a suffering, hurting, old man like Don Pedro.
