Theme of Appearence VS reality in Othello

In our lives we meet different people. With some we become friends, while other just disappear from our lives. Some people are honest with us while other people are not and still other people give the appearance of being honest but are really lying to us. This theme of appearance and reality is one of the themes that appears in Othello by Shakespeare. Two of the characters that appear one way, but are in reality totally opposite are Iago and Desdemona.
Iago is one of the plays main characters. In Act I scene i, Iago says "I am not what I am." Right away we get suspicious as to what that means. In the course of the play, we realize exactly what he means. Throughout the play Iago is friendly towards all the characters, while planning how to use them for Othello's downfall.
In the end of Act I, Roderigo is preparing to drown himself because Desdemona, whom he loves, is married. Iago, appearing to be a good friend, tells him that he should follow them to Cyprus. Eventually Desdemona will get tired of the Moor and seek someone younger. Roderigo believes what Iago tells him and decides to go to Cyprus. What Roderigo does not realize, is that Iago has his own reasons for 'saving' him. Iago is planning to use Roderigo later.
In Act III, we see how Iago uses Roderigo to make Cassio lose his job. After Cassio losses his job, he goes to Iago to ask for advice. Iago advises him to ask Desdemona to ask Othello to reinstate him. Cassio thanks him.

In Act III, Iago sets Othello against Cassio. The two of them see Cassio talking to Desdemona. Cassio leaves when he sees Othello. When asked by Othello if Iago thinks it was Cassio talking to his wife, Iago responds:
