Elections

The validity of democratic elections in a country depends, to a great deal, on the awareness of common man. The more information available to the common man, the more he (she) tends to become a voter and play his (hers) role that is vital to electoral process. Identifying the source(s) that provides this information to a prospective voter is, therefore, extremely important. There are two main candidates for this source of information: interpersonal communication and mass communication. In this research we will use the 2002 national elections held in Pakistan as a use case. Our goal is to identify the sources of information that played a major role in pushing prospective voters to actually vote on the election day. In particular we would like to conclude what roles interpersonal and mass communication played. More specifically, we would attempt to analyze the roles played by the mass media: television, radio and newspapers. The individual role

We expect that the analysis presented in this study will, in future elections, help to make the information dispersal more efficient, hence, helping our country move towards a better democracy. Our first goal is to compare the effects of different information sources-interpersonal and mass communication-on the knowledge gained by prospective voters. SignificanceElectoral process is critical to the evolution of democracy for any nation. Secondly we would like to identify the one source of mass communication, between television, radio and newspaper media, that had the most impact. However, in this study we also address how information is dispersed using interpersonal communication channels e. Also we will attempt to raise new issues that have not yet been considered because this topic has not been studied in too much detail. Finally we would attempt to classify how the different sources of information affected voter's behavior and possibly their final decisions. , rallies, public debates and discussion groups etc. It is generally thought that mass media is the major communication channel that is used to disperse information to the masses in context of an election. It is important to understand the factors that effect this electoral process. One of the major well known factors that affect voter turnout as well as election results to a great deal, is dispersion of information to the masses. Our goal would be to find out how, in the 2002 national elections in Pakistan, the different presentations of the same information by different forms of media affected voter's decisions differently.
