After World War II Artistic Development

1. Discuss political development in Great Britain.Political development in Great Britain has been stable, where two major political parties have "Smoothly alternated in power and pursued policies of an underlying continuity." The Conservatives place a larger emphasis on the private sector in the economy, and the Labour Party has often been the winner during times of economic downturns, where they struggle to balance the budget and reassure creditors loans will not fall through.Up until the 80s at least, both parties shared in improving public services, especially education and transportation. Their big differences lay in to join or not to join the Common Market, to protect black immigrants or not, and whether to allow Scotland and Wales local representation. The biggest problem though was still the economy.Their industry just couldn't keep up with the other industrial nations, and inflation didn't help anything. After World War II, Britain faced problems with weak management, demanding labor unions, poor education, and high costs of welfare and defense - all of which did nothing but add to the country's financial woes. This peak of recession in the 70s affected all the parties.

Unemployment was rising, it was a crisis. One difference between European communism that the Soviet Union represented, and Maoist philosophy, was the great industrialization of the Soviet Union. Sympathetic with their cause, millions of workers went out on strike. By the 80s the economies were also facing "increased competition from the Japanese," and increased production in other parts of the world, in industries they once had dominated. In 1968 students from Paris universities nearly overthrew the de Gaulle regime. Arnheim gives us a picture of a painter, but Otero shows us the man behind the paintings, and he is as fascinating as his worked. " His world policies didn't necessarily please those at home however, and he was voted out of office in 1964. Education reform did come about, as did welfare and social programs, and reform in the government. Khrushchev also gave the impression that the Soviet's were happy with their achievements, and would be foolish to risk any "world conflagration. However, a third party did spring up, the Social Democrats, and government still "seemed to flounder on old divisions. He is a shy man, he doesn't enjoy the "homage" paid to him. The soldiers found it wasn't that easy, however, and faced splits among themselves, as well as "raging inflation and declining production. All over the world, students were expressing dissatisfaction with universities, foreign policies, and the war in Southeast Asia. " He also feels art is not truth, nor is it nature. Originally Otero planned to make a movie, but it didn't work out, so he assembled his photos and wrote a book about Picasso's last years.
