After World War II, Britain faced problems with weak management, demanding labor unions, poor education, and high costs of welfare and defense - all of which did nothing but add to the country's financial woes. This peak of recession in the 70s affected all the parties.
Unemployment was rising, it was a crisis. One difference between European communism that the Soviet Union represented, and Maoist philosophy, was the great industrialization of the Soviet Union. Sympathetic with their cause, millions of workers went out on strike. By the 80s the economies were also facing "increased competition from the Japanese," and increased production in other parts of the world, in industries they once had dominated. In 1968 students from Paris universities nearly overthrew the de Gaulle regime.
