The History of Immigration to America

             Immigrants came to the United States for job opportunities, because where most of them came from there was no opportunity at all. Their many other reasons for the departure from their country, whatever it was, it must have been serious. I know for a fact that if it wasn't they wouldn't have left. Throughout my essay, I will describe in detail the history of immigration.
             The top three nations from where the immigrants came from are Germany, Ireland, and England. The Germans were coming here to relocate to avoid religious or political persecutions, suffered on account of their beliefs. The Irish came here because of the potato famine. So people were starving and dying and the only way out was to leave for the United States. The English people came here to improve their economy, by planting things like tobacco here and then exporting to England to sell, making England profits without having to use the land. Many people convicted of pretty bad crimes were often sent to the U.S., as indentured servants, which are laborers who are forced to work for a period of time before regaining their freedom. People either had wrong thoughts about them or they thought they would bring disease into the country.
             The immigration population went from 30 million to 75 million in thirty years. So the United States, couldn't let every person in that wanted to come, so they made some immigration restriction laws. The first restriction was only 150,000 immigrants per year could come into the United States so that we wouldn't have overcrowding. The second restriction was discriminatory based on nationalities, meaning we would only let a certain percent of different nationalities into the countries. Secondly, they have to be skilled or educated workers to be excepted into the U.S. Next refugees fleeing persecutions and war were excepted into the country because they lost their homes from their hardships.
