Articles of Confederation

When the United States was first starting they needed some form of government. The Articles of Confederation were formed to direct this new nation. This leads us to the question of whether the Articles of Confederation were truly effective, or whether they were not. The Articles biggest success was providing America their independence. It established a government where citizens where loyal to their states first and the national government second. The articles worked fine during the war w

This provided them with little or no money to pay their army, which made them mad, as shown in document C. The Articles however failed to have both an executive branch and a judicial branch. In document E is shows how it also helped create more states in the country, and those states brought money to the national government. The Articles not only didn't have any power within the U. These are two things that are essential for a government to succeed. In conclusion, the Articles were a success in getting us our freedom and starting our new country. They did help the United States prosper with Market Value on their exports to Great Britain, as shown in document B. They had no power over the states, which caused the states to be able to veto their suggestions. Document A shows us how if the states didn't agree with something that Congress proposed they could just say no. , they also didn't have any power with foreign countries. The also demanded that they be put in possession of all posts and territories within their limits, as shown in document D. They could not tax, but had to request funds from the states. The government had no money, and no power. However, there were several weaknesses in it, which caused it to in the end fail. They were having troubles working with Spain to navigate the Mississippi River, which document F shows us.
