To Accept or not to accept (ETHICS)

In the fast-paced world of Public Relations (PR), clients come and go like a revolving door. Some come back again, while many others come and go as they please. In an industry where reputation is everything, the ethical codes adopted by the firm are equally important. Protecting one's company from possible ethical code violations such as conflicts of interest is essential. PR Company Inc. (PR Company) is located in Fictionville, where casino gambling has been legalized for about 5 years. The casinos are apart of parent companies based in Las Vegas. The PR work for the casinos in Fictionville is done by smaller companies as they are more in touch with the local markets. In 1995, Tyler Durden - President and CEO of PR Company - met with Frodo Baggins, CEO of Rich Casino. Their purpose was to negotiate PR Company handling all of Rich Casino's PR. The negotiations were a success, and throughout the years Tyler and Frodo's business relationship flourished. The work done by PR Company was excellent, it got the Fictionville casino out of several tight spots, and it also helped Rich Casino become the premiere casino in Fictionville, a position once held by Super Casino. PR Company's efforts did not go unnoticed by Harry Potter, CEO of

When better options are available with one decision, it becomes that much harder to turn them down. He spent countless hours and dollars over the past 15 years building his company from nothing to the largest African-American PR firm (based on profit) in Fictionville. Once the example is set, it becomes easier to properly practice the rules. It seems easy to say the offer is not right, so it cannot be accepted. He detailed the reasons why he felt it was unethical for him to accept the offer, and expressed to him his hopes to work with him in the future on any non casino-related projects. Tyler's duty to the company is to understand such codes, and stick to them steadfastly, as he sets the tone for the rest of the company. The executives are given the task of properly exemplifying such rules. It seemed almost like magic to Harry that Super Casino was now the number two casino in Fictionville because they had been number one since both opened. The final issue Tyler considered was PR Company's overall reputation, which is almost more important than anything in PR. Accepting the proposal from Super Casino meant more money which might give him the opportunity to hire more staff, upgrade computer systems, etc. His sense of right and wrong told him that it is wrong to accept this offer, and right to politely decline it. They are put in place to serve as a guide for the company. By switching, Tyler felt as if it would leave the company vulnerable to a lawsuit which could affect them financially. Lawsuits and cancellations of contracts could have occurred in the long run because there was a definite conflict of interest. Although they are on two different extremes, the principle of increased incentives leading to extreme greed is applicable.
