School Uniforms
With all of the violence that has occurred in schools over these recent years, there has been a questions raised as to whether school uniforms should be required in public, aswell as private schools. The violence in these schools has left parents wondering if itwould happen in their child's school next, and they are willing to try any solution toprevent it from happening. School uniforms seem to be the simplest and fastest solution inthe minds of the cautious, but this doesn't mean it is the most effective one.The common belief is that school uniforms would change the behavior of students during school hours. But in all actuality, the way a student acts is reflected upon the way they are raised and their mental state at that moment in time. A person's behavior oractions doesn't necessarily relate to his attire. His attire is just an expression of hispersonality. Therefore, a mandatory uniform rule in public schools will most likely helpcreate new problems, instead of resolving the already apparent ones. Students seem toagree as well. There is no reason topunish the rest of the student body who has no fear about being singled out for the waythey look and no intend on singling anyone else out for the same reason. This in no way helps to improve education and academic achievement,because instead of learning, these students are busy being punished for standing up fortheir individuality. In conclusion, I don't feel that the action of enforcing school uniforms in public schools was fully thought out. Some people even believe that uniforms are just an attack on brand-name envy,black trench coats and bare midriffs in schools ("A Fit for School Uniforms" 10). It seems as if the adults with power think they know what isbetter for the students. They thought that school uniforms would solve everything, but they didn't expect people to disagree or rebel. My biggest problem with uniforms is that we don't get to express our individual personality. I'm not the only one that feels his way. And this proves my point, "Our findings indicate that students uniforms have no direct effect on substance use, behavioral problems or attendance" ("Parents Across the South. Instead, it is more expensive for the parentto send their child off to school each year, especially in the urban-school areas. This will result in punishment of some sort, possibly detention oreven suspension. "Some critics argue uniforms aren't alwayscost-effective and are just a 'quick-fix' for urban-school problems that demand muchdeeper reform" (Cook 12). And I for one have always felt that the way I dress expresses the kind of person I am and the mood I am in that day.
