Shakespeare stands out alone, both in his own age when so many were drawn to the form and circumstances were favourable to this kind genius, and in all English literature, as the one great and genuine dramatic poet.
Centuries have passed after his death, but there is none to outweigh Shakespeare in his genius. This is certainly an astonishing fact. A person with fourteen years of formal education and with no academic ambition creating an epoch is a rare phenomenon. Shakespeare is one such person. Is Shakespeare an enigma? How was it possible for him to scale great heights with no academic back up? These queries have always been lingering in my mind. My queries found reply in Sri Aurobindo’s writings. I am compelled to incorporate some of his ideas in this paper because I accede whole heartedly to his estimation of the great literary figure.

Character is destiny is the backbone of all Shakespearean tragedies. Had she been more thoughtful and considerate the consequences would have been different . Shakespeare made modifications to the original piece according to his own interest and purpose, and made it a remarkable piece of work. In short William Shakespeare continues to live amidst us through his works and will continue to live for time immemorial. This corresponds not only to Iago but also to the whole society . Desdemona is certainly an exceptional woman . Hence in depicting the suffering of man, Shakespeare doesn’t make the common reader feel the lack of justice in the play. That’s why the Indian poet Kalidasa who also wrote out of intuition is referred as the Shakespeare of India. Had the couple been aware of the dire consequences of their act ,they would not have taken the hasty decision of elopement. The theme of the tragedies is the struggle between the good and evil resulting in serious disturbances, sorrow and suffering .
OTHELLO – MY ANALYSIS OF THE PLAY
Shakespeare’s four great tragedies – Othello , Macbeth , Hamlet and King Lear are very popular for the powerful portrayal of the gruesome aspect of life. Moreover he sows the seed of catastrophe by saying “Look to her , Moor , if thou hast eyes to see: She has deceived her father , and may thee “. Shakespeare resembled his contemporaries only externally.
