The Divison of the North and South

In the time leading up to the civil war many changes were dividing our nation. The southbecause their agricultural economy was starting to slow down, was losing political influence. With technological advances our nation began to grow. The north's industrial economy wasthriving and provided the rest of the nation with jobs and manufactured goods. With all of thechanges happening disaster could be everted only so many times. In 1829 Andrew Jackson took office as the President and his Vice President was John C.Calhoun. Calhoun was from South Carolina, and South Carolina had a little problem with thetariff that were placed upon them. They call this tariff the "tariff of abomination". To meet thechallenge of his state Calhoun came up with nullification. Nullification was created though theidea that the states made the government though the Tenth Amendment to the Constitution. Nullification stated that the states had final say over the courts or Congress. The idea was that ifCongress passed a law or bill that didn't seem constitutional to the state, then the state couldnullify it, or deny its existence. As the controversy grew a debate broke out in the Senate in

" This was an answer, and an attack onCalhoun. Eventuallythere were 50,000 miles of wires, and then the Pacific telegraph company connected New Yorkto San Francisco with 3,595 miles of wire. With the factories taking over the industrial position many artisans beganto cry out. The Illinois Central had the idea of building a railroad to the Gulf of Mexico, butto do this they would need some help. Only one view hanged in the balance, thePresidents. " In saying this he stated that thestates had no business in Constitutional matters. Jackson viewing this as treason proposed the forcebill, which gave him the use of the military to enforce the acts of Congress. In this compromise the tariff would return to the status it had at 1816 by 1842, thecurrent year being 1833. These strikes failed,so the women decided to look to the government for help, but soon it became immigrants thatpowered the factories. South Caroline went to work, naming Hayne as thegovernor and Calhoun and the senator to replace Hayne. In these canals there are locks to raise and lower the water height so that the ship couldmove into different bodies of water. At first it was the native born workforce, those who worked infactories lived and worked in horrible conditions. There had tobe a quicker way east, and there was, canals. Just as things startedto heat up and violence looked like a real option, Henry Clay stepped in and said letscompromise. He was on the North's side, now the two most influential people in the Executivebranch were and opposite side of the argument.
