Comparison of Elizabeth in the novel Frankenstein
When classical text is converted into film by modern people, we sometimes find out that certain characters change in a way more suitable for a film version. This is the case of the novel 'Frankenstein' written by Mary Shelly in 1818. It was recreated in several different versions of film. The particular one directed by Kenneth Branagh in 1994 suggests a somewhat different character of cElizabeth' from the novel. As a result, the change can take effects in which would be conducive to draw attention from the audience. No matter what the genre may be, it is worthwhile to know about the character of Elizabeth in efficiently understanding 'Frankenstein'. Elizabeth was originally a step-sister of Victor Frankenstein. Having been accepted as a family member, she has been a playfellow of him when they were young. As time passed, she became a lover, a soul mate. She desired to overcome the loss of Victor's mother, and sometimes took role as a stimulator in a way that encouraged him to recover from series of tragedies. But after they were married, she was murdered by the monster that Victor had created. In other words, s
In other words, she is highly 'vocal' whereas Elizabeth in the novel is 'silent'. In consequence, establishment of different character in the movie can effect in three ways. Thus she was treated equally with Victor Frankenstein in the process of converting, and which gave rise to modification and adding in her character. As the director, Kenneth Branagh, made a comment on how, they wanted to develop a strong woman character. Finally she decided to call on him to make sure whether their love was still strong, even though it was an epidemic season. Furthermore, the fresh approach to the character of Elizabeth takes good effects, which makes the story more proper in a cinematic way, and hence, provide people with an opportunity to appreciate the great work anew. Therefore, it was a successful way to draw attention from the audience. In addition, if her wants cannot be fulfilled as in a way of her seeking, she is able to quit the love relationship and leave him. Lastly, as she had been dealt with of a great importance, recreation of Elizabeth and her suicidal behavior at the end of the movie, which had not been represented in the original version, could be justified and be accepted. She could not get them from him for a long time, felt being abandoned by him. In the novel, she is tranquil, highly obedient, and secondary, in other words, she considered him a more important being than herself. In fact, she can be defined as a more extroverted figure, sharing 'love of equals' in the film version. As we read the novel, it is reasonable to think that her love is mainly manifested through 'silent' agreement. Elizabeth, as a counterpart of Victor Frankenstein, is a crucial person both in the novel and the film.
