Sociology Survey: Alcohol abuse, illicit drugs, smoking
Throughout my experience in high school, I have noticed trends involving many topics. For example, I have seemingly noticed that, in today's youth, males are more likely to abuse alcohol and drugs, or at least try and experiment with them. However, on the other hand, I have noticed that females are more likely to smoke cigarettes. To test my hypothesis, I conducted a survey, which was adminstered to a total of twenty people, containing a total of fifteen questions on the topics of smoking, illicit drugs, and alcohol. The questions were mainly aimed to find out how often my peers partake in these substances and why they do or don't. The survey also questioned if the person thought the consumption of these substances caused a problem in society, and if they did, what could be done to help improve the situation When conducting my survey, I tried my best to use a valid sampling of the population. To do this, I split the survey among genders, giving 10 to males and 10 to females. I also tried to administer it among several different "cliques" and not just my own. I made sure to give the survey to people in the 13-19 age range, so that my results, over all, would be representative of America's youth today.
40% of females said that alcohol consumption was the biggest problem, either because people aren't as aware of it's dangers as they are with drugs, it posed more of a danger to the immediate environment, or more people partake in drinking. The survey also demonstrated some other trends. For example, it shows that 90% of males think illicit drug use is the biggest problem with today's youth. 28% of males in twelfth grade have reported illicit drug use in 2001, however, only 24% of females have. , I was able to determine that my hypothesis was extremely accurate. Of course, I am a little appalled that 35% of my peers know at least ten people who abuse alcohol or drugs on a regular basis, but I knew what I was getting into. With the guys, though, they said use of illicit drugs was a problem because they are the most fatal and the easiest to obtain. 30%, though, said that something should be done, but they don't know what could possibly help. However, it also went on to show that 20% of females smoke, and only 10% of males do. According to the survey, males and females have mostly the same reasons for trying cigarettes, drugs, or alcohol. 20% of the people as a whole said that it's not even worth bothering with because nothing will work. The data showed that 83% of guys said they never would and 86% of girls agreed. This then proves that my observations have been correct. On the contrary, 35% know ten or more, 20% know 7-10, 20% knows 4-6, and another 20% knows 1-3 people. I honestly expected it to be higher, so I was very glad to see that only 35% of today's youth regularly use these substances.
