It only workds on 65-70% of it's patients and by works I mean makes them have no feelings. For the next four months or so parients are reported to be in a "median" stage which is were they are feeling both manic and depressed.

Patients who are diagnosed with manic-depression are treated with lithium and the outcome is moderate. This is not a problem that individuals can control. After the "median" stage is over the individual will move on to a depressive stage that tends to last quite a while, anywhere between six months to a year. The individual will experience periods of maic episodes and periodes of depression. Patients with bipolar disorder are particularly sensitive to thyroid fuction variations, even within the normal range. Therefore, mothers who are diagnosed suffer greatly as they feel like they are unable to care for thei children properly. Lithium makes the individuals feel neither depressed nor manic, but along with that it makes them niether happy nor sad, which to me makes them a little dead. Manic episodes usually begin abruptly and last anywhere in between two weeks and four to five months. very few suffers are even diagnosed with the disorder.
