Danger Zone

Danger Zone by David Klass is a book about racism and judging people before getting to know how they really are. A person’s color or culture does not mean that a person does not belong.

Jimmy Doyle and Agustus Lemay are both fifteen year old boys who have difficult lives. Although they had many hardships, both boys were born with the passion and talent to play basketball. The boys were picked to play for the USA Dream Team. It seems like they have things in common but because Agustus is African American and Jimmy is white, Agustus immediately resents Jimmy for being white as well as for taking his cousin’s spot on the team.

They arrived in West Los Angeles where they all met for the first time. From the first time they met Agustus

. . .

In the last game something begins to happen. Although I am not experiencing this personally right now racism occurs in school, in your neighborhood, in sports and we hear it on the radio and listen to it on the news. Whenever Jimmy would make a shot or give a pass Agustus would come over to him and give him a high five. ” After that Jimmy held out his hand to shake and be friends but Agustus replied, “ if you hold your arm out any longer it might brake off. Agustus once went up to Jimmy and said this after Jimmy asked who Devonne Sanders ( Agusutus’ cousin) was, “ He ‘s the guy who should be the other starting guard, but they dropped him to put some whitebread on our team, that’s you Mr. This book was a perfect example on how you can’t judge someone before you even know them. I had to write a paper in high school about the ‘I have a dream’ speech, where Martin Luther King said he had a dream that his children would not be judged by the color of their skin but, by the content of their character. ” Agustus doesn’t see Jimmy in one other way except that he took his cousin’s place and that he is white. One time Jimmy went up to Agustus and said, “ it’s unfair to judge me because I am white.

Although Jimmy and Agustus are of different color doesn’t mean they cannot be friends. made racial remarks and treated Jimmy very poorly. As of today we can’t avoid it but hopefully it will all end soon. King’s kids should be true for me too.
