America vs Microsoft

             It is the company people love to hate. It affects our lives in many ways, from the newspaper we read in the morning, to the papers we write at school. Recently, the software giant has been under fire and is at risk of being split up into smaller companies. However, it will be broken up due to unjust rulings and false accusations, not only in behaviors of Microsoft, but of attitudes. The court also ruled falsely on charges of a monopoly.
             The Supreme Court that is ruling for Microsoft has issued a monopoly against Microsoft. Due to this ruling, remedies will be taken to punish Microsoft for this allegation. One such remedy is the Watch Dog Team, which is a monitoring group to watch for any suspicious behavior with Microsoft (Bennet 2). The team will hover over the company and report any behavior relating to a monopoly. Another remedy is to make Microsoft more compatible with other computers. For example: Microsoft will be forced to not force other computer companies distributing Windows to also purchase Internet Explorer (Bennet 2).
             Instead of using remedies and other forms of compensation, other software companies argue that monitoring is not enough. They believe that Microsoft must be broken up into smaller companies
             (Bennet 2). By doing this, they say, it will solve the monopoly problem and monitoring will not be needed. However Microsoft has fought hard to prevent this, denying that it is a monopoly.
             In 1998, the Department of Justice, DOJ, presented a document listing the violations of antitrust Microsoft made and also presented complaint of Microsoft's anti- competitive behaviors (DOJ 1). The document cited unlawful, exclusive dealings with other computer distributors. In other words, Microsoft forced distributors to purchase Windows related products with their computers even when they didn't want it (DOJ 1).
