Greeat Expectations - Character Analysis of Pip

             In the book Great Expectations by Charles Dickens, the main character, Pip, is a boy who grows to become a man of admirable qualities. This story is the circumstances and events that occur in-between these two time periods, and how they affect him as a person. In Latin, Pip means "seedâ€". Just as a seed grows and changes, Pip experiences life changing events and struggles. Pip is a boy growing up in the slummy community of Khent. Though Pip feels like he is confined to his small community when he is young, his expectations reach further out than even he realizes. Pip experiences three stages in his life. The beginning and youngest stage of his expectations, the new found, noble and snobby stage of his expectations, and finally, his enlightened and matured outlook stage, of those ever-fading, "great expectationsâ€".
             "My convict looked around him for the first time, and saw me †I looked at him eagerly when he looked at me - I had been waiting for him to see me, that I might try to assure him of my innocence. It was not at all expressed to me that he even comprehended my intention, for he gave me a look that I did not understand - I could not have remembered his face ever afterwards as having been more attentive."" (39). This quote describes Pip's brief reunion with Magwitch after he's been captured by the police. In this stage of Pip's life he is always concerned with other people's impressions of his behavior. He is anxious for Magwitch to know that he is innocent - that he is not responsible for turning Magwitch in. But Magwitch looks at Pip with feeling that Pip believes has nothing to do with Pip's innocence or guilt, or look that Pip "did not understandâ€" but was the most "attentiveâ€" look Pip had ever received.
