Heterogamy, also known as intermarriage is the marriage between partners from differentsocial, racial, religious, ethnic, or cultural backgrounds. These marriages are more likely to breakdown due to the differences the spouses share between each other. Different views may arise inthe marriage that may cause conflict, which both may not have a solution too. These differences are so influential to one's character that it makes itextremely difficult for one to sacrifice these differences, even if it means saving one marriage. Also, when children become afactor in a marriage this too can play a role in the failure of the marriage. This is when themarriage is likely to crumble because in most cases love is not the variable needed in for asuccessful marriage. The couple mustdecide what faith identity to provide for their children. These factors may be over looked by lust or love for the person whendeciding to get married, but can come into play later on in the marriage. Later on in a marriage when the initial desire and passions for one antherhas faded, one might be left with the realization that they married someone that they are nolonger compatible with. This is key because when a conflict occurs in a interfaith marriagewhere one or both partners refuse to sacrifice their religious in order to salvage the marriage,therefore not able to comprise which later can lead to divorce. In the text book differences in religion is seen to be a significant factor in the break downin heterogamous marriages. In conclusion, heterogamous marriages break down due to the significant differencesbetween both parties. In a interfaith marriage providing a faithidentity for the children involved is difficult because each spouse may feel that their religion isthe best for the child's upbringing.
