Affirmative Action

I believe that affirmative action should not be allowed or encouraged toremedy past discrimination. I feel that the affirmative action legislation showsfavoritism toward minorities, which is not based on their own abilities, but by theirnationality or race. I also feel that affirmative action is no longer needs to beconsidered in employment, education, and contracting decisions. Women andminority groups today have the same abilities and talents as white men do, andthey should not be accommodated based on past discrimination of their particular Throughout the 1960s and 1970s deeply rooted racism and segregation waswidespread and many civil rights activists took charge. The civil rights movementsoon took effect, and with the passing of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 affirmativeaction was created to help cure past discrimination and end segregation.

Now affirmative action is being questioned andmany believe that it is no longer a productive policy. The past cannot be changed and we should stop compensating people whowere never hurt at the expense of people who have done them nowharm(Domingo, George). " I believe that new forms of legislation can improve and update the oldaffirmative action clause, without damaging the purpose of it. This value can be used to defend both sides of the argument, but in fact, affirmative action in its current form does violate this value in that quotas are usedto fill jobs rather than the skills of the worker. , as it doesin the rest of the world, most blacks entering the job market today were born afterthe Civil Rights Act of 1964 and have suffered little or no prejudice in terms ofsalary. Although discrimination still exists in the U. Affirmative action promotesthe hiring of less skilled workers. I agree with president Clinton when he says, "mend it, but don'tend it. Affirmative action was a noble invention that served its purpose, but it is nolonger needed. In conclusion, I think that it is time for new generations to examine newideas. Affirmative action decisions are generally notsupposed to give any preference to unqualified candidates. Some people say that affirmative action is justified as a way of making upfor past discrimination.
