Underneath Your Clothes

Love and sexual fantasies are often openly expressed in music. Occasionally, artists will conceal secret messages in their love songs. “Underneath your Clothes” by Shakira is a beautiful example of a love song with tainted intensions. Shakira uses many innocent phrases to hide her true intensions of sex because she wants to eventually use sex to achieve control over men.

The lyrics of “Underneath your Clothes” show how Shakira repeatedly uses innocent phrases to mask her intensions of sex. Shakira begins her song saying that the man she is seeking is “written by the hands of God” (line2-3). She uses the holy term “God” to set a pure tone to her song suggesting that her secret yet sinful intensions are harmless. A person with untainted objectives could and would have found another way of saying that a man was good looking, without mentioning God. Later in her song, Shakira hints her purity by implying

If this line is only expressing love without sex, Shakira did not have to wait until “[. But, Shakira has sexual intensions that lead her to fantasize about a man without his clothes.

Shakira uses innocent phrases to secretly mask her sexual intensions, because she wants to use the sex to control men. Shakira’s included such innocent lyrics to keep her wicked sexual intensions secret, so she can later use sex to gain control over men. A person without sexual intensions would not even think about another person naked, especially a person of the opposite sex. The song “Underneath your Clothes” has sexual intensions covered up with innocent words and phrases. By using this specific simile, Shakira suggests that she is a “good girl” that was taught superior manners. Employing those words in that combination implies that Shakira desperately wants to have sex. And that the man she chose is “[her] territory” (line16). Saying that her territory is right under the guy’s clothes implies that after she has sex, the man is her property. An artist only wishing to express love would have ended their song with a simple “I love you.
