The Scarlet letter is a very important and impacting story to the time back then on the East Coast, to now in 2002. It is a love story that is broken up in several different ways. Sometimes you may think it’s just a story about how leaders in that time handled things. This could be true. You may also think it’s a story of the Devil and revenge on one another. That could be true. Or, you may think it’s a story of a woman coping with the trademark of an adulterer. All of these things should be taken into consideration when dealing with the thought of the Scarlet Letter story. It is not only a love story, but also a story of leadership, revenge, and all ends with misfortune.

First of all, the Scarlet Letter could be defined as a story of love. This story could truly be a love story. The main plot to the story is love. The reason that Hester wore the scarlet letter is because she was in love with a man. In most old love stories, it usually happens at the end that a big misfortune happens and the two lovers are separated either by death or the world’s rules. It paints a perfect picture of how the Devil can kill and destroy things in life. If you stayed on their good side, you will remain unharmed. He tries to make his revenge several other times after. On the scaffold, the demons came of Dimmsdale and he passes away before the eyes of his lover and daughter. Hester Prynne had to wear a red letter “A” upon her chest for all of her life to signify that she was an adulterer. If people didn’t know her personally, they judged her because of the letter on her chest. The Leaders, the Revenge of Chillingworth, the misfortune of the outcome, and the love of the two adulteresses changed the meaning of the scarlet letter forever.

Like in Romeo and Juliet, they were separated forever by the stroke of misfortune. Because of this, everything falls into place. Chillingworth made a huge impact on the story as far as revenge. The leadership in the times of these was very harsh. The lover remains a mystery, but the story goes on as a love story. Chillingworth made Hester promise not to give away his identity so that he may stay anonymous and remain among the crowds unnoticed. The two were separated by death, but in the end, Pearl grew up with the knowledge and joy of a normal person, Chilingworth is no longer a threat, and the letter of scarlet that Hester wears upon her chest is only but a legend.

In the third chapter, Chillingworth, Hester’s former husband, had told Hester that he would take his revenge on whoever was Hester’s adulterer.
