This is due to the brain coming to depend on cocaine, and because there is not enough dopamine in the synapses, the person experiences the opposite of pleasure, which is depression, stress and so on. The hypothesis of this study suggests that Cocaine users are more vulnerable to stress then normal people. And as for the open field the rat would spend more time in the sides, near the walls then the centre, because in the centre it risks possible exposure to predators hence it will become more stressed. Stressors can be physical or emotional, internally or externally generated. Cocaine is a drug which acts as a potent dopamine agonist. More dopamine accumulates in the synapse, resulting in feelings of intense pleasure. Stress is a consequence of our everyday life. It binds with and deactivates the dopamine transporters proteins, thus blocking the reuptake of dopamine after it has been released from the terminal buttons. The most common stressor is change, such as lost of a loved one; career change; illness or injury and lifestyle changes. Stressors can be events, situations, people or demands the individual perceives to be the source of stress. Rats normally live in small burrows where the walls are normally touching them and providing a sense of security.
