Why had international Peace collapsed by 1939?
Why had international Peace collapsed by 1939?Hitler came to power in 1933. In 1942 he wrote a book entitled "Mein Kampf" describing what he would do if the Nazis ever achieved power in Germany. When Hitler did come to power he has 3 main aims. His first was to abolish the treaty of Versailles. He believed that the treaty was unjust and he hated it because it reminded him of their defeat in WW1 and their humiliation by the allies. Hitler promised that if he came to power then he would reverse this. He also wanted to expand German territory because the treaty had taken land away form them after the First World War. He wanted more "living space" for Germans, and wanted Austria to join with Germany and for German minorities in other countries like Czechoslovakia to rejoin Germany. Hitler hated communism and he wanted to get rid of it. He believed that they helped bring the defeat of WW1 and believed that they wanted to take over Germany. To be sure that they didn't Hitler wanted to remove them once and for all.The League of Nations were set up in the 1920s so that each country could feel protected after the war and it would be like a world parliament to keep the peace and sort out any problems. In the early 1930s there were two
Britain and France had told Germany that if they attacked Poland then Britain and France would declare war on Germany. Germany demanded land through the policy of Appeasement and was able to reclaim its loss from WW1. The test for the league this time was to see if they could sort themselves out and solve this problem quicker than the Manchuria crisis. Britain and France astonishingly stuck to their word, and to a very surprised Hitler, proclaimed war on Germany. They saw Hitler as the buffer to communism. Japan had a very strong army, it had a strong industry and a growing empire. They wanted to keep Hitler happy so he could see no reason to starting another war. The two countries were extremely powerful together and a threat to the rest of the other allies. They hoped that Germany would be a peaceful nation again. Many also felt that the treaty was unfair to Germany and that it was too harsh on them. Many British people didn't actually mind this because their main worry was communism. He did this by a policy of appeasement, which basically meant that Britain gave Hitler what he wanted to keep him happy so that he would have no reason to try and cause a war. Once more the league didn't want to risk losing a major power form the league because if they did then they would have to fight against those powerful countries of it came to war, and the league wanted those countries on their side rather than on the opposing side.
