The Stranger

Meursault ,the main character in Albert Camus' The Stranger, is both a round character and a static character. Although he does not seem to be well developed, the reader does learn a lot about this character. He is dull and does not show any emotion to situations that would oppress, please, or scare other people. He does, however, say what is in his mind. He will answer questions that are asked with the most sincerity even if it gets him into trouble. This attitude is seen throughout most, if not the whole story.
Meursault's apathetic manner makes the reader feel a sense of shock, and it is disturbing to see the way he reacts to the events that happen around him. When he first receives the telegram informing him about his mother's death, he seems not affected and nonchalant. Meursault says, " After the funeral the case will have a more official feel to it." (p.3) He wants to have an "official feel to it" , when most people would feel sorrow and gloom. Meursault, on the other hand, does not show a single sign of grief through out the whole funeral.
The love for his mother is later put into question when asked whether
he felt sadness the day of he funeral and says to himself, "I probably did love maman, but that didn't mean anything." (p.65) The relationship with his mother was not a profound one, but more of a mutual relationship. She was more of a friend or acquaintance than a love one.
The same can be said about his relationship with Marie, his girlfriend. Both of them like the time they spend with each other. Marie even seems to love him. He does feel something for her, but it is more sexual than love. Marie asked Meursault if he wanted to marry her, in response he said, "It doesn't make any difference me." (p.41) He does not mind pleasing her. He would go as far as to marry her, despite the fact that he doesn't love
