Cause and Effect Essay - Borders/The Bicycle/Lysandras Poem

             The choices people make today, have either small consequences, or large consequences. This occurs in the following three short stories. In "Borders", written by Thomas King, Laetitia decides to move off the reserve. Her mother cannot say she is either American or Canadian and this results in not being able to cross the border. In "The Bicycle", by Jillian Horton, Hannah decides to ride her bike against the wishes of her aunt and also refuses a plane ticket to New York which jeopardizes her music career. In "Lysandra's Poem", written by Budge Wilson, Elaine decides to join the poetry contest, and Lysandra decides to dance with the boy Elaine liked. In each of the short stories, the main characters make choices that results in a consequence, either positive or negative.
             First, in the short story "Borders", Laetitia decides to move off the reserve. Laetitia says life around the reserve is boring: "Laetitia turned off the set and said she was going to Salt Lake City, that life around here was too boring"(King 86). By moving out of the reserve during her teenage years, she gets the chance to live and develop her future in a better location. There are more jobs in a large city, than on a reserve, and there are also better opportunities in a large city. In another character decision, Laetitia's mother refuses to cooperate at the border by stating that she is neither an American or Canadian citizen. "Blackfoot side"(King 82), she said. She chooses to respect her heritage but by doing this, she is not permitted access to the United States. Therefore, it is evident that Laetitia and her mother both make choices that affected them in some way, in this case both positive and negative.
             Secondly, in the short story "The Bicycle", Hannah decides to ride her bike. Hannah was not allowed to ride a bicycle because her aunt, Tante
