Do you consider alcohol to be a drug? Many people unfortunately do not consider beer, malt beverages, and other alcoholic beverages to be a dangerous drug. Alcohol kills more than 50 times the number of people killed by cocaine, heroin, and every other illegal drug combined. Alcohol use is also the number one youth drug problem. Underage drinking can cause irreversible brain damage and research shoes that the earlier children drink, the more likely they are to come alcoholics later in life and the more likely they are to drive drunk and suffer senseless injuries. Young people who begin drinking before the age of 15 are four times more likely to become alcoholics than those who start drinking at 21. I find this fact really alarming because of the vast amount of children that drink. I would hate to imagine these same people 10 or 15 years down the road still hitting the bottle to solve problems or just plain have fun. The government pays a lot more attention to cocaine and marijuana use than the number one most used drug among young people. Rarely have I seen a family getting broken up, an innocent child getting killed in a car accident caused by a drunk driver, a person getting permanently handicapped except in a Lifetime movie. But everyone’s drinking effects at least four other people.
Some people wonder where underage drinkers get their alcohol, sadly two-thirds of young people who drink alcohol buy their own. There is also a new breed of alcohol appearing out on the market. People think there are a lot more dangerous things people can do besides drink. By rite of passage, do they mean putting young people at risk? The risks of underage drinking, and drinking in general are far beyond any benefits alcohol consumption may have.
I firmly believe that young people see alcohol as a way out. In a survey of 900 adults, 76 percent believe parents should be held legally responsible, and 74 percent support restrictions on alcohol advertising. Also, alcohol is associated with the three leading causes of death among young people, suicide, homicide, and vehicle accidents. Perhaps underage drinkers feel that their drinking doesn’t effect anyone else beside himself or herself.
