My Last Summer
"What happened to the engine?" My sister asked with a look of terror strewed across her face. "There must be a problem with the oil." My grandfather said. "How long do you think we'll be stuck out here?" I asked. "Least two hours." my grandmother said with a bit of a sigh. It was early on a summer day up in Round Pond Maine. The sun had just blossomed over the watery horizon ahead. The Tide was up, our boat; the "Salt Air" was out, and we decided to take a ride out to sea. "You got the poles grandpa?" I hollered back as I started loading the boat. My sister and I had recently received our licenses and we were anxious to drive the boat. "I grabbed a camera in case we catch something." My grandmother said as she came out of the cabin. She was brandishing a camera and had a bag around her shoulder that had sandwiches peeking out of the top. All set? My grandfather called. Then he picked up the anchor and shouted... "Let's take her out. "I turned the key. There was a low rumble of the engine. The smell of fumes wafted into my nose as I set the bilge, trimmed the engine, and drove it out of the harbor. I loved driving. The salt in my hair, the smell of fish. When I wasn't driving, I missed it as the sun misses the flower in the de

We felt the extreme heat coming from the engine and it felt like an oven being opened. " My grandmother said with a slight chuckle. A minor defect that occurred 2 months before we drove it. BANG! The sound of a gunshot cracked through the air as the engine smoked, and came to a halt. When we were back in the harbor, we tide off the boat, waded our way back to dry land, and waved goodbye to our helper. It seemed as though we caught a fish every 30 seconds.
