The Civil War
The Civil War was the bloodiest war in American history. It lasted from 1861- 1865.The war divided so many people living in the United States. The war was between theNorthern people which had a more up to date way of living and wanted to end slavery andan agricultural way of life. The South wanted to keep slavery and not change their way of The war started on April 12, 1861 when Southern troop fired on a United Statesmilitary post in Charleston, South Carolina. It lasted four years on April 9, 1865 GeneralRobert E. Lee an Confederate surrendered his army to General Ulysses S. Grant in a small Virginia settlement. The North had won victory in the early 1864 because theywere wearing down the South. The South was losing alot of battles and the North wasusing alot of the Confederacy areas. And also the Southern railroad had almost stoppedrunning but that didn't stop the South they still fought for over a year
Another majorproblem facing the Confederacy was not enough resources. Union supplies were far more advanced than those of the Union'sability to export agricultural products added cash to the Union. * Lost most of their good military officers to the South. As a resultthe Confederate government was always trying to fill the ranks of it's army. Which was the only way they could survive. In their crop- basedeconomy, money was rare and there outdated factories made weapons production hardbefore the war the South dependent on imports and the federal blockade began to limitsouthern access to these products like food, medicine, and clothing the Confederate armybegan to suffer. * Their long coastline, while a benefit in sneaking in supplies was also a detriment in trying to defend it * Southern slaves, a large patt of the population, were clearly no help. But the Confederacy had advantages over the union too even though it didn't help like: * Trading Relationships with Europe * Best Military officers like Robert E. * British and French leaders sympathized with then due to economic reasonsThe Confederacy also had disadvantages which was probably a factor for then losing the war like: * Their smaller Navy left then a disadvantage due to the Union blockade. The North was more industrialized then the South and counted on manufacturing, banking, and other financial enterprises for alot of it's income was also an importantagricultural region with the exception of cotton, the North out- produced the South in everytype of agriculture. * Little industry and factory productionSome of the factors that caused the South to lost the war are:The Confederacy during the Civil War didn't have enough people, the slaves weren'texcepted to fight to protect slavery because they were granted the right to enlist in the armyto fight against slavery so the south's population became smaller then the North. The North won the Civil War because they had certain advantages over theConfederacy like: * Banking, Factories, and ships *More railroads to move supplies, men and equipment * larger navy * Experienced government * Larger population, 22 million to 9 millionEven though the Union had advantages they also had disadvantages like: * They were not as " into it" * Northerners were not in complete agreement over the abolition of slavery. Lee * Long coastline made blockade difficult * They were convinced they were right * They were fighting for their lives and on their own soil. .
