Women's Role in A Doll House
Throughout the history of the world in most cultures women have been considered thesubmissive figure. In this role the female character would commonly have the main dutiesof caring for the children and pleasing her husband. Henrik Ibsen's A Doll House showsone of these stereotypical marriages and the eventual realization of the life that is beinglead by the woman submissive, in this case, Nora. Nora's realization at the end of the playis not a sudden epiphany but a long journey in which she regained her self-esteem and selfworth. This essay will attempt to show that throughout the play Nora's frustration hadbeen building and that in reality, the one act of sacrifice which Nora so desperately cravedfrom Torvald might have delayed the destruction of the marriage, but nothing could The play opens and the reader quickly can see how one would get frustrated in theenvironment Nora lived in. Torvald is characterized as the typical male provider, strongand respectable. Meanwhile, Nora is degraded time and time again by Torvald's language. He consistently refers to her with pet names, "little featherbrain, "squirrel sulking", and"song bird". All of these references make Nora seem ignorant and she seems
Throughout the play we had seen Nora develop more and more independence andcourage and this trend would not stop. The next stage of the book we begin to notice differences in Nora. Through this statement she fully realizes that the only way to be more thenthe "doll" which she has been throughout her life is to escape Torvald. During this Krogstad tries to manipulate her with theknowledge that she had forged her father's signature. Linde in itself is a sign of her wish to gain independence as it issomething which she had not even told Dr. Linde "Don't be so superior" inresponse to questioning of her. She expected a "miracle", that Torvald would sacrifice himself for herand take the wrap. We see a new side of Nora in this part of the book whenever Torvaldisn't around. Butby far the most significant occurrence is the appearance of Mrs. She is introduced to us as a helpless housewife who is incapable of thinking for herself. She seems to be proud of the way she saved her husband's life, and heradmission of that to Mrs. She has come very far from thewoman who couldn't even admit to liking macaroons at the beginning of the play and evengoes so far to call Mr. The ultimate example ofthis is the situation with the macaroons. Linde, butmore development was soon to follow.
