'Guerrillas' and 'A Bend in the River' are two well written pieces of literature written by the same author, V.S. Naipaul. Both novels blend together a good mix of characters and themes accompanied by the setting. Both novels are highly advanced pieces of literature that would be for more advanced readers. These two novels are extremely similar in a variety of ways due to the plot and storyline, but don't be fooled, these two novels are different and hold a sense of originality. Between these two complex pieces of literature, a sense of connection is experienced. V.S. Naipaul is a very complicated writer that loves to overload his writings with a tremendous amount of meaning. However, he tends to overload a small observation with too much meaning, making small things seem bigger than they seem and at times causing confusion. 'Guerrillas' was the better one of the two novels, using more literary devices. Although one had more literary devices, both novels had very similar writing styles. This is logical fact because both novels were written by the same author. Both novels' point of view is in the first-person narration and the use of thoughts throughout the novels is strongly evident. 'Guerrillas' is written in the po
Violence in both novels begins with a single death related incident, where a sense of connection is experienced in a violent, though tragic manner. Both protagonists' loves to view things on different perspectives. According to Northrop Frye, these two novels are advanced pieces of literature to be learned later and not at the novice reader. 'Guerrillas' is based upon the African and Chinese community while 'A Bend in the River' focuses on the African and Muslim community. As both novels move on, both characters life and position is in danger due to rising conflicts and problems. Jane is a more negative type person while Salim is positive. This gives both novels a different feel and different perspective on the situation in each novel. In 'Guerrillas', Jane is murdered by Bryant and Jimmy, and Roche decides to go back to England. Then the novels end with the death of a character and a rational reaction by the characters to the death at hand. 'Guerrillas' and 'A Bend in the River' also have similar themes and settings. It can be said that these two novels are rather advanced and is not meant for the beginning reader. Both novels have rebels and rioters that contribute to the violence and it is a result of hatred and prejudice in the land. Their outcomes may seem deserving, because they are arrogant individuals that are disliked by other characters in the novels. 'Guerrillas' also foreshadows future outcomes in the novel, like Jane's fate. In 'A Bend in the River', the situation of the country is foreshadowed throughout the novel, foretelling violence and conflicts.
