Julius Ceasar

Shakespeare took a lot of superstitious beliefs from his time and put them into this play. He probably uses that method to get the crowd into the play a little more. Shakespeare probably was a superstitious person himself after reading his plays you can really tell that he was. In The Tragedy of Julius Caesar superstition was used constantly. In the first appearance of Julius Caesar, Shakespeare used superstition. Julius Caesar wasn't a superstitious person compared to other characters in the story. Julius Caesar was the type that thought that superstition was for those other people with problems like the common people. If people back then weren't superstitious then they were said to have bad luck. I


Calpurnia had the dream that Caesar was going to die. n the first scene with Julius Caesar a soothsayer came to him to warn him about the ides of March. He used the fact that Caesar wasn't superstitious so he died because of that. Shakespeare put this in the play to probably persuade the audience to be superstitious. In the second act the ghost of Caesar appeared at night to Brutus. She really thought that it could happen because of her superstitious beliefs. If you weren't superstitious then you wouldn't believe it but Brutus was a little superstitious about the visit from Caesar. Calpurnia kept on thinking that he was in danger because of her superstition of her dream. Shakespeare used it to connect his audience with the play so they could relate it to their lives. In this play all of the superstitious happenings came true. Shakespeare really used it in this play the whole story was based on a superstition. Other superstitious situations in the play involved characters that were not even alive. Everyone else who heard the soothsayer took what he said into consideration. Caesar did not believe him because of his belief that superstition was not real.
