Freedom of Speech
In Philadelphia on July 4, 1776, Thomas Jefferson along with fellow high ranking government officials wrote the Declaration of Independence. This article till this day serves as our guideline of set boundries and rights of freedom. One amendment in particular, the first states the following : Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances. What this amendment states is that the government cannot set boundries on religion, freedome of speech in press or in media. That is why today in this great county America there are many different religions assembled becuase the citizens of this country may establish religion without problems or the government not complying with the religion. This amendment also goes for the media world. Music, movies, television, and newspapers
One particular event comes to my mind when thinking about the First Amendment would be when hip hop star Marshal Mathers (better known as Eminem) was looked down appon by the governemnt and society when his lyrics caused much controversy in the media after his lyrics about homosexuality and murder where exposed to the public through his first and second compact discs. Government and others have tried to block ones rights of the First Amendment as in the cases of both Eminem and Tupac in history, but in the end the First Amendment comes out on top and the artist continues to make music and they are free to practice their right of freedom of speech. An organization named GLAAD, the Gay & Lesbian Alliance against Defamation was enformed about the lyrics that this rapper was unleashing into the media waves and what kind of behaviors Eminem had been promoting and was determined to stop Eminems lyrics by means of law suit. In the song he would say obscene comments about C. Deloris Tucker would later sue the estate Tupac Shakur for emotional damage Throughout time we see people promote their First Amendment rights, in movies, music, television, and newspaper, people all over the world express their rights of the First Amendment on a daily basis by folowing a certain religion, or possibly giving ones opinion on a topic that he or she feels nessesary to comment on. Another popular name in the music bussiness that had problems with the first amendment and rights being blocked from freedom by government officials is the late Tupac Shakur. The first amendment states a freedom of speech law that alows for any given United States citizen to say what he or she chooses to say in the media or in the press. are all affected by the first amedment because the first amendment states that you have freedome speech and press which means that you are alowed to be as creative or outgoing in the media and are alowed to publish your opinions in news papers. Deloris Tucker, made herself clear when she announced that she would do anything in her power to get rid of "gangster rap" and its foul ways. Deloris Tucker and other government officials in charge of sensorship to shop that he can easily say anything that he may want because of the First Amendment right to freedom of speech. As a result Tupac's music would recieve much heat from the press and also government officials in charge of censorship and rights. But as the First Amendment states that people have freedom of speech in the media and Eminem would not have to abide to the law suit and would continued to make music with his own influences and his right to freedom of speech. Although Tupac was recieving lots of negative tension from government officials and music officials, he released a song promoting his freedom of speech.
