Life in Colonial America was very diverse from today, but we could still compare it to our Family Life today because it is when it marked the beginning of our history. There is an underlying core common in both sides of shelter and food, but families have changed, psychologically, socially, and materialistically. The Black Family, however, suffered to obtain a plate of food for their children that also worked in the fields. This was the foundation of gospel and soul music. For the Colonial Family, school and church were very important in the household. The 17th Century Colonial Family and the Black Family in the Late Colonial Period lived very different lives in very different conditions. Once there, they would sing, pray and preach. They followed a very strict schedule during the day, and at night got together for entertainment. The Black Family had different aspects in school and religion. They had a great admiration for religious spirit, and would usually walk 20 miles on Sundays to get to church. The Colonial Family was first of all a business, each household was self-sufficient and provided their material wants. The Black Family and The Colonial Family were very alike in their work lives. They served as house of correction and welfare institution. Parents were charged by law to educate their children to at least read the Scriptures. The slave mother would have to take her infant child with her to the fields in order to work and feed the infant at the same time. Studying and understanding these ways of life make us more bright and understanding.
